The Electric Insurance Company® name derives from our historical relationship with one of the world's largest and most respected companies — the General Electric Company®. Back in 1927, our predecessor, Electric Mutual Liability Insurance Company, was formed by GE to provide it with Workers' Compensation insurance in Massachusetts. By the 1950's, the company expanded its relationship with GE to handle a wide array of its business insurance nationally.
In 1966, Electric Insurance Company was established by Electric Mutual Insurance Company with a new charter: provide real value in auto and home insurance — and the same care and commitment to exceptional service — to GE employees.
In the beginning, we only offered insurance to GE employees, including an exclusive Personal Excess Liability employee benefit. But so many of them raved to friends and family that by the 1970's we were compelled to open our doors to all.
Today, almost half of our auto and home customers come from outside the General Electric family. That's a strong statement about the value we bring to people's lives. Independent sources agree — our claims department recently won the Customer Service Department of the Year category in the American Business AwardsSM, the Better Business Bureau gave us an A+, and A.M. Best rates us as "Excellent."
Our affiliation with GE remains strong. Our leadership team includes veteran GE executives, and our commercial lines division handles worker's compensation, general, and excess liability for GE both domestically and internationally.
We're proud of our name, and prouder of the integrity and accomplishments that have come to characterize it.
