Accident Checklist
In the event you’re in
a car accident, the following instructions may be useful. Be sure to review
and print out this page, and then save it in your car’s glove compartment.
Right after the accident occurs:
- Try to stay calm
- Check to make sure anyone who needs medical help gets it right away
- Move away from the vehicles and try to take steps to warn other motorists
of the accident (put on hazards, light a flare, etc)
- Call the police immediately
Information to gather:
Getting the correct information right away will help your claim
go smoother. Be sure to get:
- Personal information of the other driver(s) involved in the accident
- Name(s)
- Address(s)
- Phone number(s)
- Driver’s license number(s)
- License plate number(s)
- Year, make and model of all vehicles involved
- Name of insurance companies for all vehicles involved
- Policy number of insurance companies
- Name of the police department that reports to the accident scene
- Street names of where the accident occurred
- Description of the accident–speed, road conditions, time of
day, any other helpful information
While at the accident scene:
Cooperate with the police department and answer their questions
truthfully. Keep communication with the other party involved in the accident
to a minimum, as information that is disclosed might affect your claim
at a later date. Exchange only the information just listed.
